What steps can I take to make my microphone work better? Answer: If you cannot record your voice in Rosetta Stone, there are a few possible causes. Please complete each of the following steps, and try the Speaking exercises in Rosetta Stone after each step. Network Version: Make that students have Read, Write and Modify permissions to the Rosetta Stone application on the workstation. Check your microphone 1. Is your external microphone plugged into the correct place? 2. Most Macs require a headset microphone that plugs into a USB port 3. The iSight Microphone will not work with Rosetta Stone due to its video capabilities 4. If you have a Cyber Acoustics USB Headset Microphone, for additional information please download the file below USB headset on your Apple Computer Check your Sound Input Settings 1. Open System Preferences and go to the Sound tab 2. Make sure the correct input device is selected (it may show as "Unknown USB device") 3. Speak into your microphone and make sure the "Input Level" meter moves 4. Make sure the input volume is at an appropriate level (usually 25 - 50%) o If the program continues to record after you finish talking, try lowering the input volume o If the program does not record everything that you say, try increasing the input volume Make all your system resources available 1. The Speaking exercises are resource-intensive, so try to work at a moderate pace 2. Avoid clicking multiple buttons rapidly in the program 3. Try not to run any other applications while using Rosetta Stone For PC’s Problem: I have a Windows computer and I am not able to record my voice in the Rosetta Stone Speaking Exercises. What steps can I take to make my microphone work better? Answer: If you cannot record your voice in Rosetta Stone, there are a few possible causes. If you are using Rosetta Stone on a network, please make sure that the students have read, write and modify permissions to the Rosetta Stone application on the workstation. All users, please complete each of the following steps, and try the Speaking exercises in Rosetta Stone after each step. 1. Make sure your microphone is plugged into the correct port o If you have an Analog Headset, then you should insert the pink plug into the microphone port on your computer (usually a pink jack with a microphone icon) and the green plug into the headphones or speakers port (usually a green jack) o If you have a USB Headset, it is best to connect it to the USB slot directly on your computer, and not to an external device such as a keyboard or USB hub 2. Test your ability to record using the Windows Sound Recorder o Windows XP: You can find the Sound Recorder on your Start Menu at: All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Sound Recorder o Windows Vista: You can find the Sound Recorder on your Start Menu at All Programs > Accessories > Sound Recorder 3. If you can make a recording in the Sound Recorder but not in Rosetta Stone, then you may need to increase your sound input levels o For instructions to adjust the sound input levels in Windows XP, Click Here o For instructions to adjust the sound input levels in Windows Vista, Click Here 4. If none of the above steps correct the problem, try disabling the hardware acceleration. To disable the hardware acceleration in Windows XP: o In your Control Panel, open Sounds and Audio Devices o In the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties window, go to the Audio tab o Under Speaker Settings, click Advanced o In the Advanced Audio Properties window, go to the Performance tab o Disable the Hardware Acceleration by moving the slide bar to None o Click OK to save these changes o Click OK to close the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties window
