Our research-based, scientific classes are taught by experts from the natural resource community, including university, state, and federal biologists and other scientists. During the training you will learn basic ecological concepts, study ecosystems of the Texas Hill Country, and explore what happens when an ecosystem is unbalanced. In addition to time in the classroom, you will participate in two field trips and complete a class project.

To become a Certified Texas Master Naturalist, trainees must complete the following requirements:

  • Attend ALL classes and field trips (A limited number can be made up the first year.)
  • Complete 40 hours minimum volunteer service on approved projects between September 1, 2009, and December 31, 2010.
  • Complete eight hours advanced training within the same period. To maintain certified status, Texas Master Naturalists must complete 40 hours minimum volunteer service and eight hours advanced training annually.

Trainees should plan to attend the Texas Master Naturalist, Hill Country Chapter regular monthly meeting at 6:30pm on Monday, August 24, for a new class reception. Classes will meet from 8:30am to 1:00pm (and occasionally a bit later) each Wednesday from August 26 through commencement on November 18, 2009. Most classes will meet in Kerrville at the Texas Lions Camp. The fee for training is $150, which covers State and Hill Country curriculum manuals, class expenses, and a $50 deposit that will be returned to you when you achieve certification by December 31, 2010. Class size is limited, and admission is competitive. Selection criteria includes a willingness to perform volunteer service and a commitment to share your knowledge for the stewardship of our natural resources

If you are interested in learning more about nature and natural resources but are not interested in volunteering, please do not apply for this program. You can stay informed about excellent classes available in the Hill Country through our website. Texas Master Naturalists are committed to serving their communities by sharing their knowledge and helping others understand and appreciate the natural resources of the Hill Country.

To apply for this training, please return the completed application to the address shown on the front page. Applications must be postmarked on or before July 17, 2009. You must mail the $150 fee with your application. Please make your check payable to: Hill Country Master Naturalist. You will be notified no later than August 1, 2009, about the class enrollment. The class fees and deposit will be returned to applicants not included in the class. There will be a non-refundable $10 fee for cancellations after August 10, 2009. No refunds will be issued after the first class date, August 26, 2009.
