Better Living for Texans offers free nutrition education to audiences with limited resources.*
 


The BLT program provides nutrition education to assist SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) eligible individuals and families in acquiring the knowledge, skills and behaviors necessary to maximize resources, have nutritionally sound diets, and improve health status and self-sufficiency.


Our educational topics include the following class series as well as single session topics:




Eat Better to Live Better - 3 Part Series

This program focuses on
 

·Learning the five food groups and discussing the importance of variety in a healthy diet.

·Discuss the need to balance food intake with physical activity

·Understand what causes foodborne illness and understand and identify the four steps they can take to keep food safe

·Developing shopping lists every time you shop and use unit pricing when comparing food prices

 

Get the Facts - 3 Part Series

This program focuses on

• Understanding the difference between a serving and a portion
• Using serving sizes to create a healthy, balanced meal by using
the plate method
• Understanding the effects of sodium on blood pressure
• Comparing food labels to consistently select products with less
sodium
• Gaining knowledge of the basic components of the Nutrition Facts
label
• Understanding the health consequences of consuming saturated
fat and trans fat
• Comparing food labels to select products lower in saturated fat
and trans fat

*examples of BLT limited resource audiences: 
• Families of students in schools that have more than 50% of the student population
eligible for free and reduced lunches
• Families that participate in the Head Start program
• Families of children who participate in the Summer Food Service Program
• Families who participate in the Women Infants and Children (WIC) program
• Families who participate in Commodity Food Distribution site programs
• Identified ZIP codes
• Identified grocery stores having $50,000 per month in food stamp receipts
• Soup kitchens, housing authorities, Even Start programs, etc.
