EarthKind

Reducing Yard Waste

Lawn grasses should not have more than one-thir of the leaf blade removed per mowing time. Lawn clippings should be left on the lawn to enrich the soil.

Leaves and tree trimmings should be shredded, then muched or composted to add free additional humus and nutrients to the soil.

Pesticide Alternative

Prolonged or improper use of pesticides can kill everything in your yard, including beneficial insects and micro-organisms that help keep your soil rich and your plants healthy.

Following label directions, proper pest identification, use of beneficial insects, proper cultural practices and the use of organic pesticides will help keep our fragile eco-system in balance.

Nutrient Management

Using MORE fertilizer than the directions call for is a big waste of money because your lawn and plants can only absorb so much.

Using the WRONG fertilizer is just as wasteful. Too much of one ingredient creates a reaction causing a deficiency of another.

Mulching

  • Keeps soil rich and easy to work
  • Suppresses weed growth
  • Saves a $1 million a year in landfill costs
  • It's FREE, free, free!

Native Plants

Native plants require a lot less water, less fertilizer, less maintenance and fewer pesticides.

Xeriscape Gardening

Xeriscaping 7 Steps to a beautiful, water efficient and low maintenance landscape.

Xeriscape, now that's a funny word. What it really means is creating common sense landscapes that will survive and even thrive during drouth periods. Bonuses include less maintenance and healthier landscapes that require fewer chemicals. It's not just rock and cactus! Check out these easy guidelines to get you going in the right direction.

Step 1: Start with a good design.

Create a scale drawing of your landscape to best utilize your outdoor living space. Consider your soil type, drainage patterns, sun and wind exposure, views of and from your property and water availability. If you consider yourself a short-timer, plan a landscape that will be attractive to future buyers. If you think you will live there a long time, plan a landscape that is customized to meet your families' needs. Consider
