Who are Texas Master Gardeners?
Texas Master Gardeners are members of our local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. They are enthusiastic, willing to learn and to help others, and able to communicate with diverse groups of people.

What truly sets master Gardeners apart from other home gardeners is their extensive training in research-based horticultural science.  In exchange for their training, Master Gardener contribute time as volunteers, working through the Taylor County Cooperative Extension Office to provide horticultural-related information to members of our community.

Is the Master Gardener Program for ME?
Ask yourself these questions:
  • Do I want to learn more about the culture and management of many types of plants?
  • Am I eager to participate in a practical and intense training program?
  • Do I look forward to sharing my knowledge with people in my community?
  • Do I have enough time to attend training and to complete the volunteer service commitment?

Training to be a Master Gardener Volunteer
If you answered yes to these questions, then the Master Gardener Program could be for you.
If accepted into the Master Gardener Program in Taylor County, you will attend an intensive training course. Classes are taught by Texas AgriLife Extension staff, specialists and local experts. The program offers more than 60 hours of instruction that covers topics including lawn care; ornamental trees and shrubs; insect, disease and weed management; soils and plant nutrition; vegetable gardening; landscape design; home fruit production; garden flowers; and, water conservation.

This group which was part of the 2007 spring class learned about botany and plant nutrition from Dr. Herb Grover at his lab located at Hardin Simmons University.

Because we want to ensure the quality and thoroughness of the educational programs and because we believe it is important to provide a personable experience for those enrolled, Master Gardener training is held once a year in the spring.  The training begins in January and will conclude in May or June.  Training sessions occur weekly on Thursday evenings with some Saturday sessions scheduled, too.

Contact the Taylor County Extension Office at 325.672.6048 for more information and to register for the next class.
