Dear Master Gardeners,

   Well, the Fourth of July celebration is approaching.  We still have room for riding lawnmower participants in the parade.  Just call Novalene if you would like to join in the fun!  You will need to come to the next meeting for instructions.  Those representing us in the parade need to meet at 8:00 at Centerville High School on the morning of the 3rd.  For those of you with 'Perfect' Celebrity tomatoes, check in is July 2nd from 9:00-12:00.  Judging will be at 1:00.  If you need volunteer hours this is a great time to get them.  You can volunteer to work at the MG booth where we will be selling watermelons slices.  If you volunteered to buy and chill two watermelons for the sale, take them to our booth in ice chests (labeled with your name) the morning of July 3rd.  At the June meeting I will have the red shirts with our MG logo.  Be sure to come get your or arrange for someone to get your shirt to you.

   Our next meeting will be June 18th at 10:00 A.M. in the third floor meeting room of Annex II.  Be sure to come and get your updated MG Handbook!

Dear Master Gardeners,

Are you pampering that perfect tomato plant? I hope you'll
take your best celebrity tomato to enter in the contest on July 3rd in
Centerville. Of course you will have stiff competition from Carole,
Novalene and Jeff.

The Food Preservation Seminar in Buffalo was a big success,
thanks to the Horticulture Committee and some of our talented Master
Gardeners. We had folks there from other counties and everyone
learned a lot and had fun!

Our next meeting will be Friday, May 21st at 10:00 in the third
floor meeting room of Annex II. If you would like to participate in our
'red shirt' effort (to have all MGs sporting a red polo), bring a red polo
and I will take the shirts to Stacey for our MG logo. She is only charging
$8 per shirt. Also, if you plan to be a part of our award-winning riding
lawnmower team in the July 4th parade (which is actually July 3rd) there
will be short rehearsal (without lawnmowers) after the meeting. Hope

Dear Master Gardeners,

Be sure to buy your celebrity tomato plant between now and the end of April at one of the following places: Bo Bo's, Woodson's, Davis Feed, Cattle Country, M&M, or Centerville Feed and sign up to participate in the Perfect Tomato Contest. Bring your best tomato from that plant to compete on July 4th. Also, consider joining the Riding Lawnmower team in the parade that day!

The Spring Fling at the Jewett Civic Center will be April 10th. Bring your plants to give away on April 9th at 11:00 and help with set up. Or you may leave your plants at the extension office in Centerville or Scott's Liquor in Jewett a few days before that Saturday. Those scheduled to work at our booth are: Karen and Ron (9:00-11:00), Elaine and Judy Hill (11:00-12:00), Carole and Kathy Holland (12:00-1:00), Novalene and Clara (1:00-2:00), Novalene, Mary Coefield and Clara (2:00-3:00), and Clara (3:00-4:00).

Other dates to remember: May 15th is the Leon County Home and Garden Tour. The Canning Seminar is April 30th at the United Methodist Church in Buffalo. You may sign up to attend one or both at the extension office.

Dear Master Gardeners,

We had a great turnout for the gardening seminar at Bo Bo’s on February
26th (with over seventy people attending). The presentations were very
enlightening and I think everyone learned something.

Remember Davis Feed is sponsoring a free organic gardening seminar
March 6th at the Buffalo United Methodist Church with Tropical John as the presenter.
It begins at 11:00 and lunch is provided afterwards. Please call the extension office (903-536-2531) and let them know if you plan to attend.

Don’t forget to grow your little plants (herbs, tomatoes, peppers, etc.) so
they will be ready to give away at the Spring Fling in Jewett on Saturday, April 10th
from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Set-up will be Friday the 9th at 11:00. If you can, please
bring your plants at that time. If that is not convenient, you may take them to the extension office in Centerville or Scott’s Liquor in Jewett a day or two early. Call Jeff Miller if you need to make other arrangements or if you would be able to work the booth 12:00-1:00 or 3:00-4:00.

Be sure to put April 30th on your calendar. That’s when the Horticulture Committee will present a canning seminar in Centerville.

Our next meeting will be March 19th in Annex II at 10:00 AM. Following the meeting Novalene will give a short presentation on basic genetics for gardeners.

Dear Master Gardeners,

We had another successful and well attended Seminar last weekend at Hilltop Lakes. Tommy, our MG group and the Horticulture Committee did a great job organizing, getting door prizes, decorating and welcoming.

The Horticulture committee will be presenting another gardening seminar at Bo Bo's Feburary 26th at 10:00 a.m. Bo Bo's will provide sandwiches and Master Gardeners are asked to take a desert.

Carole is preparing the next newsletter. Deadline for submission of articles is February 10th.

In preparation for our exhibit at the state conference Novalene is asking that you send her any good pictures you have of activities we have participated in involving wildflowers. That would include the wildflower trip to the Austin area, Ag Awareness Day, the wildflower project at Centerville Elementary, and the making and throwing of wildflower seed balls.

Charlene and Becky are asking that you please save clothes and accessories for the scarecrow packages for next year.

If you will not be attending the state conference in April and would be available to help at the Jewett Home and Garden Show, please reserve the date, April 10 to volunteer for that. Hopefully everyone is planning on contributing several small plants or herbs to give away at the show.

Dear Master Gardeners,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and the beginning of a peaceful and healthy new year. Our December meeting and Christmas party was held at the Huebner's Christmas Tree Farm on December 14th. The weather, food and fellowship couldn't have been more perfect.

Don't forget to sign up for the Landscape Seminar on Saturday, January 30th at Hilltop Lakes. The focus is on growing and preparing herbs. Speakers will be Tom LeRoy and Bill Adams authors of The Southern Kitchen Garden and Judy Barrett author of What Do I Do with My herbs. The cost is $75 per person and includes drinks, snacks and lunch. Call the extension office to make your reservation.

Registration for the 2010 TMGA Conference in Dallas April 8-10 is now open (www.2010tmgaconference.org).

Our next meeting will be Friday, January 15th at 10:00 in Annex 2. Dues ($12) are payable at this time. If you can't be at the meeting, you can mail your dues to Karen Hale (P.O. Box 190, Jewett, TX 75846). Hope to see you there! Included please find minutes from November and December.

Dear Master Gardeners,

On monday we decorated the natural Christmas tree in the lobby of Annex 1. The beautiful tree was donated by the Huebners. The natural ornaments made by our Master Gardeners are wonderful. The tree just gets prettier every year.

Terry Keeling is heading the new Buffalo High School landscaping committee. Volunteers include: Doris, James, Novalene, Cheryl, Karen, Ron, Greg, Charlie, Mary Sue, Mary Focheux, Cozy, and Joy. Terry has asked that the committee try to get by the site before our next meeting/party and then to meed after the party at his house.

Our annual Christmas party (and December meeting) will be at the Huebner's Christmas Tree Farm on December 14th at noon. Everyone is asked to take a covered dish and a nature/gardening gift for the gift exchange. Cost of the gift should be under $15.

Dear Master Gardeners,

          The very busy month of October is finally behind us.  Pumpkin Patch was a wonderful success and community outreach for us.  It was better than ever and about 885 students attended.  Everyone who worked on PP is very much appreciated.

       Congratulations to Carole Huebner!  She had the winning ticket for the beautiful autumn quilt donated by Elaine Trefry and made by Elaine's mother.  The raffle brought in $415.

       If you think you would be interested in helping with Christmas at Fort Parker please contact Novalene.  The dates are December 10th -13th.  Volunteers are especially needed on the 10th and 11th when students will be visiting the fort.

       Our next meeting is at 10:00 AM November 20th at Annex 1.  Bobette Heaton , one of the original Lone Rangers will speak at the meeting.  We will elect officers for 2010 and decide on a date to decorate the natural Christmas tree at this time.  Those who helped with Pumpkin Patch are asked to stay for a short de-briefing meeting afterwards.  See you there!

Dear Master Gardeners,

     We have had so much excitement since our last meeting!  The Master Gardeners won first place (in our division) in the Buffalo Stampede parade!  Decorations were great and everyone had a wonderful time.  Master Gardeners who participated were: Mary Coefield, Leaminda, Mary Focheux, Karen and Ron Hale, Carole, Clara, Cheryl, TJ, Becky, Cherlynn, Jeff and Kay, Charlie, Sara, Novalene, Cozy and Doris (who reigned as pumpkin queen).

     On September 28th, many of us participated in Ag Awareness Day at Fort Boggy.  It was an exciting and very informative event for our fourth and fifth graders.  Mgs who helped:  Novalene, Sara, Mary Sue, Charlene, Mike, Charlie, Cheryl, TJ, Clara, Mary F., Leaminda, Kay and Jeff.

      The rose garden beds have been tilled and mulched and are ready for roses at the end of the month.  Those who made this happen are Cheryl, TJ, Charlie, Mar F., Brenda, Jeff, Marianne, Ron, Karen, and Judy J.

     It's almost Pumpkin Patch time!  We need help on October 10th at the United Methodist Church in Centerville.  We will begin decorating at 2:30 and then unload pumpkins at 4:00.  If you would like to help with Education School Week, please call Becky Lord.  If you would like to help with Pumpkin Sales, call Cheryl Loftin.

     The time and location of our next meeting have changed!  We will meet at noon on October 16th at the Methodist Church.  We will have a potluck lunch with the interns and then our meeting will follow.  Bring something wonderful to share!

Dear Master Gardeners,

     On Friday, September 4th, Dr. Rector will be teaching his very interesting class on Environmental Horticulture and everyone is invited to attend.  It will be at Annex II at 9:00am.  The following Friday (11th) we will be going to the A & M Range for Dr. Rector's Native Grass class.  It's all in the field, so wear comfortable shoes.  We are leaving the Annex at 7:30 am to avoid being in the field in the heat of the day.  There is room in the van for six additional people; so if you would like to be one of those, call the Extension Office and reserve your place.

     Pumpkins for the Pumpkin Patch will be delivered to the Methodist Church in Centerville on October 10th.  Please make plans to be there to help unload.  It's time to build scarecrows for the Scarecrow Packages!  Doris and Becky are in charge of the scarecrows for Buffalo.  Please help them with this project by joining them at Doris' house on September 11th.  Charlene will email everyone when she has the dates for building scarecrows for Centerville.

     Our next meeting is at 10:00 am September 18th at Annex I.  We will try making wildflower seed balls then so bring your gloves!  The following day, Saturday, September 19th is the Buffalo Stampede.  Novalene has a riding lawnmower drill prepared (which you should have received in your e-mail) and it should be a lot of fun!  Call her if you can bring your riding lawnmower and join us in the parade.  We will meet at the High School about 8:30 that morning.

Dear Master Gardeners,

Our last meeting was at the home of Jeff and Kay followed by lunch and a fun shower for Wendy and Tommy. Little Abigail Elizabeth is sure to be a gardener (or at least dress like one).

Thanks to those who helped with the luncheon for the new Master Gardener interns. Though there are only eight in the class, it seems like a great group.

Please note that our next meeting is at 10:00 on August 14th. We will meet at Annex 1 since the new class will be meeting at Annex 2. We had changed our meeting date so we could attend Dr. Rector's Native Grass class on the 21st. However, he had to reschedule it and the trip to the A & M Range is now September 11th.

Carole is working on the next newsletter and asks that you submit articles to her by August 7th. Also, there will be a Pumpkin Patch planning meeting at the home of Mary Sue at noon on Wednesday, August 12th (date change). She will provide lunch. If you are unable to attend the meeting and would like to help, give Mary Sue a ringy-dingy.

The last meeting at Judy's house was such a treat! Everything was just beautiful and she even fed us! Judy and Novalene had plant cuttings for us too. The following day was the Home and Garden Tour which was well attended and lots of fun. our own Carole Huebner stole the show at BoBo's with her rainwater harvesting demonstration.

Please note that our next meeting is June 19th at Annex II and will start at 9:00 a.m.. After the meeting we will go to the City of Centerville Municipal Building where there will be a canning and preservation program at 10:00 presented by Cynthia torno, Wendy Neyland and others. The July meeting will be at the home of Kay and Jeff, followed by lunch and a baby shower for Wendy and Tommy. They are having a baby girl (Abigail Elizabeth) and the nursery colors are pink and brown. The date of the August meeting has been changed to the 14th so that members who want to go to the A&M Range for a class on native grasses by Dr. Rector on the 21st may do so.

Our next meeting will be May 15th at the home of Judy and Jimmy Hill. After the meeting we will have a picnic.

We will have a native plant tour May 8th at Terry Keeling's home. Bring a sack lunch. He has extended the following personal invitation: "I'm really looking forward to having everybody here on May 8. Some of you have never been here. Even those of you who have been here before, I have made lots of changes/additions since last time - and the rains have brought about a lot of improvements. You are aware that my house is protected by the Barney Fife Security System... but I have now added something else to protect the security of the driveway leading up to my house. I will try to program him ahead of time to expect you. As long as you don't provoke him, I think you'll be OK. See you on the 8th." Terry

Be sure to sign up for the Annual Home and Garden Tour on May 16th. It will begin at 1:00 and the cost is $10. The Wildflower Tour is May 26th-27th. We will tour the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Museum, shops in Fredericksburg and the Wildseed Farm. Cost is $50 plus food and lodging.

If you were unable to attend the last meeting, please read the minutes and find a committee that interests you and let the chairperson know you would like to help.

Our next meeting is Friday, April 17th at Bo Bo's. They will provide lunch for us and we are asked to bring desserts. After the meeting, Ginger will do a presentation on container gardens. Please bring the plants you have to donate to the Jewett Home and Garden Show to this meeting. If you can't attend the meeting, you may take your plants to the extension office in Centerville or to Scott's Liquor in Jewett. After Ginger's presentation, those who can help will go to the Civic Center in Jewett to set up for the show on Saturday.

Be sure to call the extension office and reserve your ticket to the Spring Home Garden Tour on May 16th. Tickets are $10. See you at the meeting on the 17th! Don't forget your dessert and plants!

Dear Master Gardeners,

Our last meeting at BoBo's, followed by a vegetable seminar, was well attended and a lot of fun. Our next meeting will be March 20th at 10:00 in the third floor meeting room of the Courthouse Annex #2 in Centerville.

There are a few events that will occur before the March meeting. The Walker County MG plant sale will be on March 14th at the greenhouse in Huntsville. There will be tow pre-sale seminars: 'Backyard Habitat' on March 10th at 6:00 and 'Herbs and Heirlooms' on March 11th at 9:00 am. We'll be unloading soil, mulch, etc. into the new beds there. The extension office really needs volunteers the week of March 30th -April3rd.

Plan now for the Jewett Home and Garden Show on Saturday, April 18th. We need our Master Gardeners to donate plants (herbs, vegetables or flowers) to be given away at the show. We will also need volunteers to help set up the booth on Friday and to work in the booth on Saturday. Also, for the first time the Chamber wants to have short presentations throughout the day. Several of you have super presentations, and I hope you will be willing to share your expertise on that day. Please let me know if you will be able to be present.

Mark your calendars for May 16th. That is the date of the Home and Garden tour. It will begin at the Leon ISD JMG garden, progresses to the Helmcamp home, then the Melasky home and end at BoBo's for a light meal.

Well, we had a very successful Landscaping Seminar on January 31st. Thanks to all of you who helped with the event.

Our next meeting is February 20th at 10:00. We will be meeting at Bo Bo's Nursery. After the meeting there will be a Vegetable Seminar until 12:30, and then lunch will be served. Ginger has asked us to bring cookies, brownies, etc. to help her that day. If you can assist with the baking, please let Charlene know.

It's dues time! If you haven't already paid your dues ($12) for 2009, you may pay at the meeting or, if you are going to be unable to attend, send a check to Karen Hale by the 20th. Also, be sure to register for the State Conference as soon as possible.

Carole Huebner is working on the next Newsletter. Pleast send her any articles, recipes, poems or anything you would like to contribute. If it doesn't make it in this Newsletter, it might get in the next one.

Dear Master Gardeners,

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and will be blessed with a new year which brings health and much happiness. We have a lot of upcoming events, starting with our next Master Gardener meeting which is Friday, January 16th at 10:00am. We are now meeting on the third floor of Annex 2 which is the new building on the corner, just east of the courthouse. Dues are payable this month. Hope to see you there!

Remember the Landscaping Seminar on Saturday, January 31st at Centerville Elementary. It will begin at 9:00am and end at 2pm. The cost is $65 and lunch will be provided.

Congratulations to our Leon County Extension Agents, Tommy and Wendy Neyland for being for being selected as Texas Farm Bureau's 2008 Excellence in Agriculture Award for the state of Texas. They will attend the American Farm Bureau Federation convention in San Antonio this month to compete nationally.

Hello Fellow Master Gardeners,

The holiday season is upon us. We will be getting together twice this month. First, the Christmas Party at Mary Sue Watson's home on Tuesday, December 9th... We have a great time at Mary Sue's beautiful home, and it's an opportunity to get to know your fellow Master Gardeners better -- plus meeting their spouses. Something new this year...a gardening-themed gift exchange. Refer to Mary Sue's invitation for details.

Our monthly Master Gardener meeting will be Friday, December 19th at 10:00 a.m. in the meeting room on the 3rd floor of the new Courthouse Annex (Annex #2). Any end-of-the-year business will be wound up, and money turned in to Charlene from the Poinsettia sale.

I'm looking forward to seeing you Tuesday night for the Christmas get-together, and on Friday the 19th for our regular meeting. Until then, enjoy this Christmas season.

Hello Fellow Master Gardeners,

November is here, and trees are displaying their fall colors. We've had a taste of cold weather plus a little rain... and the holidays are fast approaching!

Our Monthly Master Gardener meeting will be Friday, November 21st at 10:00 a.m. in the meeting room on the 3rd floor of the new Courthouse Annex (Annex#2). The new class of Master Gardeners has been meeting there for awhile, and this is a great way for the rest of us
to see the new building.

We will be electing officers for 2009 at this meeting.

The Poinsettia sale is underway, with delivery set for Monday, December 1st. Also, we will decorate our natural Christmas tree in the "old" Courthouse Annex on this same date, time to be announced. So be collecting some items to use...such as pine cones, sweet gum balls and other seedpods, dried flowers and grasses, twig art, and ornaments made from pumpkin seeds or other natural items (you can spruce them up with a little paint if you wish); or string up some popcorn, cranberries or golden raisins as garlands. We also use ribbon, yarn and raffia to attach things to the tree and to add more color.

I'm looking forward to seeing you next Friday.

Hello Fellow Master Gardeners,

Our regular Master Gardener monthly meeting will be Friday, September 19th at 11:00am, in the fellowship hall at First Methodist Church in Centerville (the site of Pumpkin Patch). Please bring a brown bag lunch and plan to stay for a Pumpkin Patch meeting afterwards. This way, we can complete our business meeting and have lunch before the new class joins us about 1:30 to help make final plans for Pumpkin Patch.

Two reminders from Pumpkin Patch Chairman Karen hale... Wednesday, October 8th at 9:00 a.m. is decorating workday at the Pumpkin Patch; and Saturday, October 11th at 8:00 a.m. pumpkins will be delivered to the site. Your help is needed on these dates.

Our regular monthly meeting will be Friday August 15th at 10:00a.m., in the small courtroom on the first floor of the Courthouse annex (the same place as last month). The new class of Master Gardener interns will be meeting upstairs, with Novalene presenting her program "Botany 50.5."

A possible field trip to Dallas Arboretum on Saturday, September 6th will be discussed. If enough Master Gardeners are interested in attending, we may be able to schedule use of the AgriLife Extension van.

Hello Fellow Master Gardeners,

Our regular monthly meeting will be Friday, July 18th at 10:00 a.m. However, there is a change in location. It will be held in the Commissioner's Courtroom on the first floor of the Courthouse Annex. That's the small courtroom located on the East side of the building, directly below the Grand Room (but 2 floors down). Also, we will be voting on our revised by-laws...so it's important to attend this meeting. The revised by-laws were mailed out recently for you to go over. According to our current by-laws, the vote must be two-thirds vote of members in good standing, so please make an effort to attend.

Looks like the rose sales booth and the home & garden show were both successful on the 4th. Thanks to all who helped out. I'm looking forward to seeing y'all next Friday.

Hello Fellow Master Gardeners,

Wow, looks like summer has truly arrived, complete with high temps and lack of moisture. That means we all spend lots of time watering and watering...

Our monthly meeting will be Friday, June 20th at 10:00 a.m. at Terry Keeling's country home. Directions and map (are available). For those wishing to ride the van or carpool, the van will leave the annex at 9:30. Everyone is asked to bring a sack lunch. Terry will furnish drinks (tea, water & diet soft drinks). Also, he needs a few people to bring folding lawn chairs, in case they're needed. Terry has added a lot of new plants and gravel walkways since last year. He will have all plants labeled and handouts available.

Just a reminder, Master Gardeners will have a booth on the 4th of July, selling roses, answering gardening questions, and handing out information about our organization. To volunteer, please contact Vanda at the meeting or by phone.

Hello Fellow Master Gardeners,

Well, Spring has sprung and it looks like summer is just around the corner. I don't know about the rest of you, but we could still use a good rain.

Our regular MG monthly meeting will be Friday, May 16 at 10:00 a.m. in the Grand Room in the courthouse.

The Lone Ranger Master Gardener organization was well represented at the recent state convention in Conroe. I'm looking forward to hearing reports from all those attending.

Also, remember work days are scheduled each month. Dates and projects may vary (usually it's on the 2nd Wednesday of the month, but not if that's the same week as our meeting). These are great ways to add to your volunteer hours, and help beautify the communities at the same time! Another opportunity: the Centerville Elementary fourth graders have done wildflower collections, and they need help identifying them on May 14th, 15th, 16th, 19th and 20th.

Hello Fellow Master Gardeners,

Warm one day, cold the next, and a few showers...sounds like Spring is on the way. It won't be long before the Easter bunny will be hopping around.

Since our regular meeting date would fall on Good Friday, our monthly meeting for March will be one week earlier than usual. We will meet Friday March 14th at 10:00 a.m. in the Grand Room in the courthouse (annex). Immediately following the meeting, Terry Keeling will present a program on photography. Everyone staying for this program will receive one hour CEU. (Note: Terry is a very accomplished photographer, with absolutely gorgeous photos of wildflowers, butterflies and other wildlife. he should have some valuable tips for us...to improve our nature photos.)

Also, our first Workday is scheduled for Wednesday March 12th. Meet at the courthouse annex at 9:00 a.m., then we'll divide up and go to various sites to work.

Hello Fellow Master Gardeners,

Wow, it's already February...but these winds and temps make it seem more like March! It's time to start thinking about planting, pruning, and starting new plants from seed indoors.

Our monthly meeting for February will be Friday, February 15th at 10:00 a.m. in the Grand Room in the courthouse. Immediately following the meeting, Novalene and Sara will present a one hour CEU program "The Three Sisters." They presented this Indian story to over 2,500 kids during "Christmas at Fort Parker." This is a great opportunity to hear this legend, see these ladies in period costume...and earn one hour CEU at the same time! (Note: We are going to try to shorten our business meeting each month so we'll have time for a one our CEU program on various garden-related topics. Terry Keeling will present a photography program in March.)

Attention: Dues need to be turned in to Charlene at this meeting, if you haven't already done so.
