General Information

All Brazoria County Master Gardeners receive special training in horticulture that sets us apart from other gardeners. Classes are taught by professionals from the Texas Cooperative Extension, faculty from Texas A&M University and local experts.

In exchange for training, Master Gardeners volunteer for a variety of Master Gardener programs. After completion of training and volunteer requirements, you will be certified and earn the title of Texas Master Gardener.

Training
The Master Gardener training program begins with 60 hours of instruction. You will learn about:

  • Flower Gardening
  • Vegetable Gardening
  • Lawn Installation and Care
  • Home Fruit Production
  • Landscape Design
  • Organic Gardening
  • Ornamental Trees and Shrubs
  • Insect, Disease and Weed Control
  • Soil and Plant Nutrition
  • Water Conservation

The second half of the Master Gardener training is the fulfillment of a volunteer service requirement of at least 60 hours. The types of service vary according to community needs, your interests and availability. In addition to working the Master Gardener Hot Line, you can choose from a variety of activities, such as:

  • Maintaining various garden projects
  • Working with the Junior Master Gardeners
  • Arranging speakers, meetings and training classes
  • Assisting with plant sales
  • Assisting in the greenhouse

The volunteer service must be finished within one year of completion of the training class.

Certification Maintenance
To maintain your certification as a Brazoria County Master Gardener there is a volunteer service minimum of 12 service hours and 6 advanced training hours. You find the activities you enjoy, use the skills you have and develop, make time to participate and get involved!
