4-H Community Service Projects

4-H members are encouraged to develop and practice skills to become helpful or useful in their club, community, country and world. 4-H community service projects allow youth and adults to work together and to help others at the same time. 4-H members in Victoria County are constantly active in community service projects ... how are YOU going to make a difference?

County Community Service Projects

The Victoria County 4-H Council challenges each 4-H Club to donate items to the Dorothy H. O'Connor Pet Adoption Center. Each month we will collect a different item to donate:

September – Dog toys (rope, squeaky toys, play balls, Nylo bones, or pressed rawhides)

October – Cat litter (any low-dust kind) and newspaper

November – Dish soap and laundry detergent (high efficiency)

December – Cat toys

January – Trash bags (lawn and leaf size) and latex gloves

February – Office supplies (copy paper, permanent markers, dry erase markers, postage stamps, pens, pencils)

March – Cat/dog beds

April – Blankets

May – Noisy offering … see how much noise we can make by dropping our extra change into donation coffee cans.

Donations can be brought to the Victoria County Extension Office or taken directly to the pet adoption center.

The Victoria County 4-H Ambassadors have started recycling empty printer cartridges and used cell phones to earn extra funding. In the last few years Victoria County 4-H has helped William Wood Elementary earn more than $342.90 just by collecting those items. The Ambassadors will use the funds from the recycle cartridges for their annual Friend Helping Friends Retreat.

The effort required is minimal and the program is free. After you register, you will receive a welcome kit of boxes and program information. The boxes will arrive with prepaid ARS labels attached so there is no fee for return shipping. After you fill them with your collected inkjet cartridges, laser cartridges and cell phones, you’ll just need to deliver them to a UPS pickup location.

When the boxes arrive at Recycle Rewards, the items will be inspected and the values for each item will be posted in your online account. You’ll be able to login to your account anytime to view your shipments, order more boxes or request a check for our earnings.

Our members have found the Recycle Rewards program to be a simple fundraising solution. The program is free, there is no obligation and no deadline. Once we got the word out about the collection, the community started producing cartridges and cell phones. As long as we keep reminding them that we are collecting, we expect to continue reaping the rewards.

We recommend your group participate in this great program. Like I already mentioned, it’s free and there is no obligation. You can send in one box a day or one box a year. Any time that you can devote to this program will return cash!

Check out the website at www.rrewards.com. If you choose to register, click “Referred by Participant” and identify ID 142581 as the referring organization. That’s us!

If you have any questions about this program, please me, Tasha Kloesel, at 576-4580.

Thanks for all of your help!

Aaron and Sam Portis are continuing to collect eyeglasses for "Lion's Club Recycle for Sight". New, used, damaged glasses and/or cases may be donated by calling Aaron or Sam at (361) 782-0349. The glasses will be sent to Corpus for evaluation, boxing, and shipping to donation sites where they will be handed out to individuals who would otherwise not have glasses.

District Community Service Projects

The District Council is challenging each county to collect pull tabs to donate to the Ronald McDonald house. To support this project at the county level, we have provided each club a 1 liter soda bottle. Your goal is bring it filled with pull tabs to each of the County Council meetings (basically that means you have two club meetings to collect tabs from members!)
